Michigan State has 15 commitments for the class of 2018, which should increase to around 20 come National Signing Day in February. One position the staff has yet to address is running back. With Gerald Holmes set to graduate and LJ Scott a potential early departure for the NFL, the staff would like to add two players to the roster. Several prospects have emerged as high priority recruits for coach Mark Dantonio and his staff.

Michigan State currently has the nation’s No. 32 recruiting class and the eighth-best in the Big Ten, per the 247Sports composite rankings. The Spartans have 15 commitments and have been at that number since July 29.

Michigan State continues to build its 2018 class and a key piece to the remaining spots is running back Elijah Collins. The University of Detroit Jesuit star is one of the Spartans’ top targets overall and certainly at his position.Collins, a 6-foot-0, 194-pound prospect, was present in East Lansing on Monday as the Spartans opened fall camp. He had a chance to watch practice and spend more time with the staff.

Elijah Collins, a member of that state championship team, nearly gave up football for basketball. But after taking his sophomore season off the gridiron, he had a desire to get back to football as a junior. He did so in a big way, leading the Cubs to their second straight Division 2 playoff appearance – just the second time in program history they’ve made it to the postseason at least two consecutive years – in his first year of varsity football.

The Spartans are also pursuing Dayton (Ohio) Dunbar’s Tavion Thomas, and closer to home, University of Detroit Jesuit’s Elijah Collins has an offer and is making a lot of noise lately.

When it comes to in-state recruiting, Michigan State puts a premium on relationships. In Mark Dantonio’s tenure, the Spartans have tried to cast their web across the state, getting close with high school coaches and getting to know players well before extending offers. The hope seems to be that those relationships will win out against other schools that show late interest. That’s continued to be the strategy in the early days of 2017, as well.

Those three commits — cornerback Xavier Henderson, tight end Trenton Gillison and wide receiver Joseph Scates — are all from Ohio and all four-star prospects. There are also a number of other targets the staff is working hard on.
