The Warriors have suspended Draymond Green without pay for Tuesday’s game against Atlanta following his heated verbal exchange with Kevin Durant.

Draymond Green took a slight discount on his second NBA contract, and it helped the Golden State Warriors sign Kevin Durant and win the last two NBA titles. Green will be a free agent again after the 2019-20 season, but if he’s able to win Defensive Player of the Year honors again, he would be eligible for a supermax contract extension. That’s five years, $235 million.

When Green agreed to his five-year, $82 million deal in 2015, he did so at a discounted rate. Golden State had just won its first title in 40 years, and Green’s prolific career was starting to take off. But he left $12 million on the table with the goal of accumulating more on-the-court success.

Green is both the Warriors’ source of energy and their best player at harnessing that energy into effective play. The player with such brash confidence and unvarnished willingness to yell at teammates is typically the team’s alpha dog, the Kobe archetype who takes the final shot in a close game and has his name announced last in pregame introductions.

The 10-year-old sports fan is the best sports fan by far, old enough to understand what’s going on but not yet jaded or preoccupied by the adult themes of the sports world. It’s pure love and the athletes are larger than life. For me as a kid it was Isiah Thomas and Billy Sims and Alan Trammell.
