Dominique Long became the latest Michigan State football player to enter the transfer portal Wednesday. After the NCAA granted an extra year of eligibility to fall sports athletes, the senior special teams standout has signaled he will try to use it at another school. Long is the 16th member of the 2020 team to leave the program since mid-November as the Spartans continue a roster overhaul with head coach Mel Tucker approaching the one-year anniversary of his hiring.

Dominique Long has a busy daily schedule: early morning lifts, class, studying, practicing and an internship. His life is rigorous, yet rewarding. Despite all of his external obligations, Long holds a 3.6 GPA while majoring in mechanical engineering. His academic excellence made him a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, an award given to the nation’s top scholar athlete – aka the “Academic Heisman.”

Dominique Long is a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy. Long, a senior mechanical engineering major, has bounced from safety to cornerback and back while emerging as a guided missile on special teams. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, he maintains a 3.61 GPA in a field that requires hyperfocus and is competing for a starting job on defense this fall.

Dominique Long’s presence has been felt on Michigan State football’s special teams for three years. Chances are, any time you saw a spectacular tackle on a kickoff or a flash of green zooming down the field on a punt, it was No. 9. On defense, though, his role — like the entire program the past few months — has been in flux.

The only constant through Dominique Long’s first three seasons at Michigan State has been his knack for making plays on special teams. In 37 career appearances, the Westerville, Ohio, native has totaled 38 tackles, with 23 occurring while covering kickoffs and punts.

“Of course we wanted to play, but there’s some positive things that can come along with it too, especially with us as a young team,” Dominique Long said. “It gives us more time to come together and just work on our technique and work on just building that community here, growing stronger bonds and all that.”

Throughout high school, Dominique Long would sacrifice breakfast for a few extra minutes of sleep. It’s one of the few things he would choose over food. A 6-foot-2, 190-pound multi-sport athlete with a rapid metabolic rate, he always carried some kind of snack around in his backpack. In the morning, though, any additional shuteye before Westerville (Ohio) South’s 7:25 a.m. start was priceless.

“This kid eats,” Westerville South assistant coach Eric Calland says. “He’d bring hot dogs out to practice. It’s kind of weird. … I’m not sure he’ll get away with it over at Michigan State. He’d be coming in on Saturdays with his pancakes and stuff.” t never caused any problems or got him in trouble. Long just needs to eat. He prefers to snack throughout the day rather than load up on two or three big meals.
