Devontae Dobbs is a 6-foot-4 280 pound offensive tackle from Bellville Michigan. He plays for a great head coach, in Jermaine Crowell of Bellville High School. As a junior he helped lead his team to a 10-1 record, but their season ended sooner than they expected after falling to Canton in the state playoffs. Expect to see Dobbs and the rest of his teammates come back even more focused next season and challenge for a state championship.

Devontae Dobbs has a growing list of friends, including teammates at Belleville High School, planning to join Michigan State’s football program. But that doesn’t mean the five-star offensive tackle for the class of 2019 will follow suit. Dobbs, the state’s top junior and No. 9 overall national prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite, has a long recruiting trip planned in April.

If Michigan State’s 2019 in-state recruiting class were complete right now, it still would be one to marvel. And we stand more than a year away from National Signing Day for that group. Four 2019 recruits from Michigan among the 33 ranked in the 247Sports composite have committed to a school. Three have chosen Michigan State. All three — 4-star Belleville (Mich.) cornerback Julian Barnett, 4-star Oak Park (Mich.) quarterback Dwan Mathis and 4-star Walled Lake (Mich.) Western tackle Spencer Brown — rank among the top 10.

Wherever he goes, DaShon Bussell plans on making an immediate impact. Whether at wide receiver or defensive back, the 6-foot-2 Bishop Luers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) athlete wants to see the field early. He feels his versatility gives him a good shot at doing just that. Bussell projects by many as a receiver, and Michigan State likes him there, as well. But in doing his research, the junior found himself intrigued by the possibilities at defensive back at East Lansing.

When it comes to in-state recruiting, Michigan State puts a premium on relationships. In Mark Dantonio’s tenure, the Spartans have tried to cast their web across the state, getting close with high school coaches and getting to know players well before extending offers. The hope seems to be that those relationships will win out against other schools that show late interest. That’s continued to be the strategy in the early days of 2017, as well.
