    Michigan State freshmen receivers Cody White and Hunter Rison both have dads who played in the NFL, and their experience around pro football at such a young age has given them an edge in fall camp. Coach Mark Dantonio said during his media day news conference last week that both will see plenty of playing time early this season, while their teammates at the position praised their eagerness to improve. The question is where will the frosh land on the Week 1 depth chart?

  • Mark Dantonio ‘pleasantly surprised’ by MSU’s talent, lists true freshmen that will play

    Michigan State is beginning just its second week of fall camp but coach Mark Dantonio has already had time to evaluate his new roster. What stands out so far? Talent, Dantonio said. “I think I’m most pleasantly surprised with how many good players we have, quite honestly,” Dantonio said on Monday during Michigan State’s media day. “We lost some players, we lost some good players, we lost some other players who weren’t going to play for us.”

  • Michigan State wide receivers are young, ‘but we’re ready, too’

    Cam Chambers waited and watched three of his classmates get their chance at wide receiver last season. First, Justin Layne moved to cornerback. Then Donnie Corley was dismissed from the program. Now, Chambers sees a chance to make his impact. “It was tough,” the redshirt freshman said today. “I wanted to help any time. I was eager to get out there. I was on-call and ready to go whenever I was called. ”He’s likely to hear his name very soon.

    The transition from high school to college can be difficult. For Cody White, at least there’s a familiar face to greet him every morning. His father, Sheldon. “Yeah, it’s been cool just having him around, being able to talk to him about stuff,” the younger White said during Michigan State’s minicamp in June.

    Josiah Scott became one of the spring game stars. Hunter Rison and Jack Camper both gave fans a sneak peek at their skills as well. Those were Michigan State’s three early enrollees. But the Spartans could be counting on a few more true freshmen to help rebound from last year’s 3-9 debacle.

  • 5 Michigan State signees who can contribute in 2017

    Nine freshmen played in a football game for Michigan State in 2016. That would be nine real freshmen. You know, the ones that are in their first year at college. We’re not talking about the ones that got two semesters of learning the ropes of college life under their belts as a redshirt before seeing the field. They’re still young and inexperienced, but not like real freshmen.

  • Grinz on Green Signing Day Recap: Hunter Rison, Cody White Both Lifelong Students of the Game

    It’s as if Hunter Rison and Cody White are coming to Michigan State with an abundance of advanced-placement credits. In wide receiving. Both first-year Spartans to be – Rison is already enrolled and White arrives with the rest of the 2017 recruiting class this summer – have been students of the game since birth, and probably before based on conclusions experts have made about pre-natal information exchange.

  • Trieu: Top Michigan State recruits driven by common goal

    Upon retiring from the NFL, Blaise Winter began speaking at clinics and helping schools with defensive line technique. One of the schools he worked with from approximately 2005-08 was Michigan State. In 2005, his son Donovan was only 6, but his father’s stories about working with the Spartans stuck with him. He decided at an early age that he wanted to be a Spartan.

  • Cody White the latest versatile wide receiver commit for Michigan State

    Cody White was among the last of Michigan State’s prospects to arrive for his official visit in East Lansing last Friday night. The three-star Spartans wide receiver commit had good reason to be late. By the time he got to East Lansing to join his future teammates, he had already scored 11 points in Walled Lake Western’s 19-point win over rival Walled Lake Central basketball, to stay in first place in the conference.
