  • 2017 Positional Breakdown: Quarterbacks

Can you believe there is actual, live, Michigan State Spartans football this week? We’re just four days away from watching the Spartans open the 2017 season against the Bowling Green Falcons. With that said, it’s time to break down the roster into further detail, and take a look at each positional group. That includes starters, backups and depth.

  • As Bowling Green nears, 6 MSU football players to keep an eye on

Following a substandard season in 2016, in which the Spartans finished with a 3-9 record and a troublesome offseason, the Spartans are less than two weeks away from beginning official gameplay, as the team will face Bowling Green at Spartan Stadium on Sept. 2.

  • 2017 Michigan State football preview: The quarterbacks

This is Brian Lewerke’s starting gig, unless he loses it or is injured. Mark Dantonio has been unwavering in his support of Lewerke and believes MSU has found a potentially special quarterback.

  • Brian Lewerke sees improvement in young offense

When the lights came on, the Michigan State offense suddenly looked different. The Spartans held their second camp scrimmage on Friday night, under the newly installed permanent lights at Spartan Stadium. And while the only scrimmage details offered by the school was a final score (the offense won, 39-33), quarterback Brian Lewerke said this week that the offense had a significantly improved showing from its difficult outing in the first scrimmage a week earlier.

  • Race for No. 2 Michigan State QB job ongoing; Rocky Lombardi also impressing

Michigan State knows who it will send out at quarterback for its season opener against Bowling Green in two weeks: sophomore Brian Lewerke. What it doesn’t know yet is who will go in if Lewerke is injured or ineffective at some point during the season. Spartans quarterback coach Brad Salem said on Thursday that the quarterback hierarchy behind Lewerke remains undecided through nearly three weeks of fall camp.

  • Brian Lewerke still MSU’s top QB, but trio battling to be his backup

Brian Lewerke remains the top guy in Michigan State’s open quarterback job, but he isn’t the only one running the offense right now. Quarterbacks coach Brad Salem said both Damion Terry and Messiah deWeaver are taking snaps with the first team, and true freshman Rocky Lombardi also remains in a continuing battle to be Lewerke’s understudy.

  • Lombardi shows ‘moxie’ as MSU position battles heat up

Michigan State hasn’t released a depth chart since preseason camp began nearly three weeks ago, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t competition on the field to help the coaching staff sort one out. The second scrimmage of camp takes place Friday, and that will go a long way toward getting a clearer picture of where everyone stands with one week of camp to go and two until the first game. One position that seems clear at the top spot might end up getting the most scrutiny when it comes to the backups. That spot, of course, is quarterback. Sophomore Brian Lewerke is the starter and nothing has happened that will change that.

  • Lewerke ‘very crisp,’ tightens grip as MSU’s top QB

Entering the third week of preseason camp, sophomore Brian Lewerke continues to solidify himself as Michigan State’s starting quarterback. Following the Spartans’ first scrimmage on Thursday, Lewerke is right where the coaching staff expects him to be with the season opener a little less than three weeks away. “Very crisp. Brian Lewerke looked very good in the scrimmage,” coach Mark Dantonio said before practice Monday. “I thought he played with poise and he did a nice job. He did a very good job.”

  • Michigan State Football: Most irreplaceable player

Michigan State is going to be a very young team in 2017, but they do have a few players that they cannot afford to lose. Max Lapthorne and I take a look at a couple players the Spartans can’t lose if they want to compete with top teams in the Big Ten.

  • Dantonio: Lewerke ‘equipped’ to handle the pressure as MSU starting QB

It was 2 a.m. on Monday morning, hours before Michigan State’s first practice. Brian Lewerke grew restless. He just wanted to get some rest.It was, after all, his first day on a new job: starting college quarterback. “It was actually making me angry because I couldn’t fall asleep,” Lewerke said the next day. “But I was definitely not as much nervous, just more excited. I feel like I know the playbook a lot better than what I did last year. I feel like I can actually go out there and perform.”

  • Breakout offensive player

As the Michigan State football season creeps closer and closer, a few of us will be giving different viewpoints on different topics about the Spartans. The Spartan offense will undergo major changes this season, but has young players that should step up. Brian Lewerke will begin his first year as the full-time starter at quarterback and the Spartans also have to replace a few receiving weapons. Grant Essenmacher, Max Lapthorne and I give takes on who we think will breakout for the Spartans on offense.

  • Michigan State all in on Brian Lewerke as starting QB, leader

“I think I’m very confident in my abilities, I think I’m very confident in the position I’m in,” Lewerke said on Monday following the first practice of fall camp. “So, I’m just trying to come out here and work as hard as I can every day, try and prove to coaches that I’m the right decision for them to start.”

  • Niyo: Brian Lewerke leads by example, not words

A quarterback’s job is not unlike that of a politician, and understanding how to work the room can be just as important as how to read a defense. That’s a lesson the best ones learn early in their careers. And it’s one that Michigan State’s Brian Lewerke, a redshirt sophomore already tabbed as the Spartans’ starter, says he’s working hard to implement as preseason camp gets underway.

  • Brian Lewerke tasked with leading reboot of Michigan State football

“I’m very confident in my abilities,” he said Monday. “I’m very confident in the position I’m in. I’m going to try to prove to coaches (they made) the right decision.” Dantonio hopes he did. All that’s riding on it is the final piece of his legacy at MSU. Because a quarterback can make that much difference, even on a young team that may struggle in other areas.

  • Brian Lewerke continues to inspire confidence in coaches, teammates and himself

One of the words most commonly used by coaches and teammates to describe Brian Lewerke has been “calm,” generally followed by “cool and collected.” Despite being far from the most vocal player on the team, Lewerke has commanded respect from his teammates with an even-keeled confidence. Heck, the guy even cut his own hair. He let the top grow out but shaved the sides on his own. That’s the sign of someone who’s sure of himself and his abilities.

  • Mark Dantonio believes Brian Lewerke is next great Michigan State QB

Four games. That’s the extent of Brian Lewerke’s college football resume. Despite the limited experience, the Michigan State redshirt sophomore quarterback continues to draw lofty praise from his head coach. “Brian Lewerke really compares very favorably with Kirk Cousins in a lot of ways, and really Connor Cook,” Mark Dantonio said on Monday during Big Ten Media Days in Chicago.
