The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced the 2017 All-American teams on Wednesday. Michigan State placed four players on the teams: Autumn Bailey (Burlington, Ontario) and Alyssa Garvelink (Holland, Mich.) were Second Team All-America selections, while Rachel Minarick (Naperville, Ill.) and Holly Toliver (Berrien Springs, Mich.) were Honorable Mention picks.

Garvelink Powers MSU to 3-0 Sweep of Furman
MSU opened its 2017 season on Friday night in Atlanta, sweeping Furman 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-11). Furman came out full of energy and led the Spartans by as many as four points early in the fourth set, but MSU tied it up at 11-11 and kept their foot on the gas from there. After a 25-20 victory in the opening set, MSU put its foot on the gas and took the next two sets by sizable margins, downing the Paladins 25-13 and 25-11 to close out the sweep.

Inside Training Camp with Michigan State’s Alyssa Garvelink
Alyssa Garvelink shares about the team’s tour to Italy, maturity in the lineup and practice breakdown. The middle blocker was a second team All-American and first team All-Big Ten selection in 2016 after putting up 1.40 blocks per set, third most in the Big Ten and 19th nationally. The Holland, Michigan, native also put down 2.39 kills per set, while hitting at a .359 clip, ranking seventh among Big Ten player.

Five Spartans Headed to USA Volleyball Tryouts
Michigan State is sending five student-athletes to the annual U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryouts this weekend (March 3-5), which will take place at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Heading to the tryout will be rising seniors Alyssa Garvelink (Holland, Mich.), Holly Toliver (Berrien Springs, Mich.), and Brooke Kranda (Westfield, Ind.), redshirt freshman Lauren Swartz (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and freshman Jamye Cox (Oregon, Ohio).
