After having its game against Indiana postponed on Jan. 17, the Michigan State women’s basketball team returns to action, hosting Minnesota on Sunday, Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. at the Breslin Center. This is the Spartans’ final home game of January.

Moira Joiner to Miss Remainder of Season
Suzy Merchant announced on Tuesday that junior guard will miss the remainder of the season due to injury. Joiner, who hails from Saginaw, Michigan, has been placed in MSU’s concussion protocols multiple times this season by the MSU Sports Medicine team.

Stalwart Defense Pushes MSU Women Past Northwestern Sunday
With dominating defense and timely shooting, the Michigan State women’s basketball team earned a 65-46 win over Northwestern Sunday afternoon at the Breslin Center. The Spartans earned the win with associate head coach Dean Lockwood at the helm, as head coach Suzy Merchant missed the game in COVID-19 protocols.

Suzy Merchant in COVID-19 health and safety protocols, out for next two games
MSU women’s basketball Head Coach Suzy Merchant will not be able to coach for the Spartans in today’s game against Northwestern due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols, according to a statement made via social media from the team. Merchant will also not be available for their game at Indiana on Wednesday. Taking her place in the meantime will be Associate Head Coach Dean Lockwood.

Short-Handed Spartan Women Stop Undefeated Nebraska, 72-69
Playing short-handed, the Michigan State women’s basketball teams handed Nebraska its first loss of the season 72-69 Thursday afternoon at the Breslin Center. Playing without junior guardMoira Joiner, freshman guard DeeDee Hagemann and senior guard Laurel Jacqmain, the Spartans were forced to use a bigger lineup. All five MSU starters played at least 29 minutes with freshman guard/forward Matilda Ekh leading the way with 39 minutes.

Spartan women’s basketball closed out the West Palm Beach Invitational Tuesday with a 74-54 loss to West Virginia at the Student Life Center. With a game-high 22 points, senior guard Nia Clouden now has 1,564 career points, passing Kalisha Keane for the No. 9 spot on the MSU all-time scoring list.
