The Michigan State softball team won its season opener on Friday morning, defeating Pittsburgh 1-0 at the Sleepy Hollow Softball Complex in Leesburg, Florida. Sophomore pitcher Ashley Miller tossed a gem in the circle, striking out 10 in a complete game shutout.

Softball Heads South as Regular Season Kicks Off in Florida
The Michigan State softball team will get its 2022 campaign underway this weekend in Leesburg, Florida, playing at the Northern Lights/Southern Nights event at the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex. Michigan State will play five games over the courts of three days from Friday, Feb. 11 through Sunday, Feb. 13. Northern Lights/Southern Nights puts a focus on teams from the north and its twelve-team field six participants from the 2021 NCAA tournament, including three that advanced to the Super Regional.

Spartans Earn Academic Honors from NFCA
The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced its list of the top ten Division I schools with the highest GPA in 2021 on Tuesday afternoon. Michigan State ranked fourth in the nation in Division I with a cumulative team GPA of 3.784. Stanford earned top honors with a 3.846 GPA.

Softball Adds Jessica Mabrey for 2022 Season
Maybrey comes to East Lansing from the University of the Pacific, where she was a three-year letterwinner and earned West Coast Conference (WCC) Freshman of the Year honors in 2019. A veteran of 93 games, Maybrey will enroll at Michigan State in time for fall semester 2021 and be a part of the Spartan softball program as it begins preparation for the 2022 season in September.
