The Spartans will welcome freshmen Jack Guggemos (Okemos, Michigan) and Jeremy Sharp (Roseville, Michigan), along with transfers Owen Finnerty (Walled Lake, Michigan) and Elijah Howe (Canberra, Australia).

Michigan State’s men’s soccer program mourns the passing of former head coach Gene Kenney, who passed away on June 8 at the age of 94. Kenney, who coached the Spartans from 1956-69, was the founding coach of men’s soccer at Michigan State. In his 14 seasons at the helm of the program, Kenney collected a record 120-13-13, good for a .866 winning percentage. He also coached the Spartans to back-to-back Co-NCAA championships, during the s1967 and 1968 seasons.

Michigan State head coach Damon Rensing announced the Spartans’ 2022 schedule on Thursday. MSU will take on seven teams that reached the NCAA Tournament last season, including Notre Dame, Akron, Bowling Green, Washington, Indiana, Maryland, and Penn State. Notre Dame and Washington both reached the College Cup, with the Huskies making the College Cup final, falling to eventual champion Clemson.

former Michigan State men’s soccer player DeJuan Jones has been called to the United States Men’s National Team for its January Preparation Camp in Phoenix, Arizona. Jones, who currently plays for the New England Revolution, will train with the United States as part of the two-week camp. Head Coach Gregg Berhalter will select the final roster for three World Cup Qualifiers, which begin on Jan. 27. Jones is one of three Revolution teammates to earn the call.

Michigan State men’s soccer senior Farai Mutatu was one of 44 collegiate soccer players invited to participate in Major League Soccer’s College Showcase. Taking place during the NCAA Men’s College Cup in Cary, North Carolina from Dec. 10-12, the Showcase will give all MLS teams an opportunity to scout top collegiate prospects in the nation, which will include players with remaining NCAA eligibility.

Michigan State seniors Farai Mutatu and Jack Beck earned Big Ten postseason awards, as announced by the league Friday. Senior midfielder Jack Beck and senior forward Farai Mutatu both captured first-team All-Big Ten honors. This is the second-straight season that the duo earned All-Big Ten accolades. Both were named to the first team for the first time after capturing second-team honors last season. Beck and Mutatu also earned All-Freshman Team accolades in 2018.

Michigan State men’s soccer fell to Northwestern in its regular-season finale, 3-1, Sunday in Evanston, Illinois. Despite the loss, the Spartans captured the No. 8 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament. Michigan State will take on top-seeded Penn State on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 4 p.m. on the Big Ten Network. Earlier this season, the Nittany Lions topped the Spartans, 1-0, on Oct. 1.

Michigan State men’s soccer midfielder Michael Miller is getting a do-over for last year’s tough senior season. Miller, like the rest of the college sports world, had to deal with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. His season was changed from fall 2020 to spring 2021. And then he was exposed to COVID, and was forced to sit out a few games.
