Throughout December and into early January, evenings didn’t mean relaxation in the Simmons household. Four-star Ann Arbor (Mich.) Pioneer outside linebacker Antjuan Simmons and his mother would sit down each night and flesh out his college possibilities. He had to make a decision all over again after de-committing from Ohio State on Nov. 30. About a week into January, he had his mind made up. And about another week later, he made the announcement on Jan. 14. He would be committing to Michigan State.

National Signing Day is less than two weeks away and Michigan State’s 2017 recruiting class is taking its final shape. How will that shape fit into next season? Nine true freshmen played last season, the most head coach Mark Dantonio has used in 10 seasons at Michigan State. Dantonio’s philosophy has been to redshirt incoming freshmen, develop them and then by the time they’re juniors and seniors those players are ready to have their best seasons.

In Scates, the Spartans will be getting a wideout with great size (6-foot-3) and the ability to go up above opposing defense backs for 50/50 balls. They had been looking for an elite talent like his at the position, with Warren Township (Gurnee, Ill.) prospect Micah Jones being another top target.

Twenty-one FBS programs will have a different head coach in 2017 than they started with in 2016. This isn’t anything new; coaching is a migratory profession. Suitcases don’t stay unpacked very long very often. Whether it’s a new head coach or assistants, coaching staffs change annually. But Michigan State has been a relatively stable exception to that rule for the past decade, since Mark Dantonio was hired to replace John L. Smith.
