Last year’s Spartans were in a similar position at this point in the year: they entered Big Ten play at 6-0 and had reached as high as No. 4 in the Associated Press poll. But their season started to unravel at the start of Big Ten play in December. The Minnesota loss on Dec. 28 was the team’s third in a row and part of a 2-7 start to league play that nearly cost the program its two-decade NCAA Tournament streak.
