How Michigan State’s defense went from ‘embarrassing’ to one of college basketball’s best

Of everything about last season that had Tom Izzo and Michigan State’s coaching staff feeling queasy all offseason, nothing rankled as much as the Spartans’ defensive performance. The 2020-21 Spartans allowed opponents to shoot 42.6 percent from the field, the highest mark since Izzo’s second season. Its final defensive efficiency ranking, 46th, was the program’s worst in more than a decade.
