Greg Kampe has been the head coach of Oakland since 1984, making him the third longest tenured active coach in college basketball behind only Jim Boeheim (1976) and Mike Krzyzewski (1980). Despite elevating the program to new heights during his time as the head coach, including reaching the NCAA tournament three times, Oakland has dipped in the standings each of the past three seasons since capturing a share of the conference regular season championship in 2016-17.
