Mel Tucker will coach his first football game at Michigan State in a little over two weeks. If he feels pressure, it will almost surely come from within. Because it’s hard to imagine outside expectations being any lower. This isn’t Tucker’s fault, of course. It’s just life right now. Oh, his Spartans will need to play with intensity, and they will need to look (relatively) organized. But the bar is low. And it should be. Under normal circumstances, the debut of a coach at a program such as MSU would carry different expectations. But these are far from normal circumstances.
