Assembling a college football roster was already a challenge. Developments in recent years, including the transfer portal and one-time transfer rule, the additional season of eligibility players were granted in 2020 due to COVID-19 and the early signing period in recruiting have further complicated that process.

“I made it clear to the players, in terms of talking to the media, we’re talking about our preparation and things that we can control and not getting ahead of ourselves,” said Tucker, the only coach in MSU history to beat Michigan in his first two tries. “There’s a certain way to approach every game. It’s just takes more discipline and intentional focus when it’s a game of this magnitude like a rivalry game. … You don’t want to add to the hype. There’s gonna be enough hype just organically with the game itself. There’s no reason to add more to it.”

Mel Tucker spent much of Monday on an airplane hopping from one state to another visiting recruits. So did most of his staff throughout the week. That chase for 2023 and 2024 prospects didn’t prevent them from using Michigan State football’s bye week from starting the Spartans’ preparation for No. 3 Michigan.

“I’m very confident in the coaching staff,” Tucker said after the Spartans’ 34-7 loss. “I’m confident in the type of guys they are. So we’re just going through a tough stretch right now, but I don’t have a lack of confidence in any one of my coaches, our coaches, on either side of the ball or special teams. That’s one of the things that gives me confidence that we can figure some things out, because we have a really good coaching staff with a lot of smart guys that care and (are) competitors and willing to do what it takes to find solutions.”

At the dawn of a new week Monday morning, Tucker shuffled the schedule to carve out enough time for a full-team film session reviewing the first half of Saturday’s 39-28 loss to the Huskies. Remote in hand, Tucker led the entire squad through each play, sequentially, instead of the usual routine of curated cut-ups of key plays and points of emphasis.

“Our sports science team, our strength coaches and our trainers laid out some points of emphasis for our players and some protocols we’re going to use this week and then on the trip,” he said. “We’re gonna make sure those things get done and make sure that we’re in a best position to be able to compete at a high level and be at our best physically and mentally. I’m not sure I want to go into the details of all that.”
