Brian Lewerke’s return is a big reason for lofty expectations this season at Michigan State. The Spartans, ranked 11th in the Associated Press preseason poll and 12th in the coaches poll, return 19 starters from last season’s 10-win team, including their do-everything signal caller. For a few, Lewerke is a Heisman Trophy “darkhorse.” For the Sporting News, the junior is also a high first-round NFL Draft prospect — as early as 2019.
