Connor Heyward took the toss from Brian Lewerke and pulled up to throw. His quarterback, his intended target, dashed off on a wheel route to the left corner of the end zone. The ball bounced off Lewerke’s hands as he leaped. Michigan State’s best chance to score a touchdown, from the Indiana 5-yard line, ended with a busted trick play and a field goal. It epitomized the Spartans’ offensive frustration Saturday at Spartan Stadium. Nothing else was working, either.
