    Michigan State is used to seeing Cassius Winston hit a barrage of second-half 3-pointers to dig his team out of an early hold. On Friday, he had a sidekick, as Joshua Langford did the same alongside him. And together, that duo helped No. 11 Michigan State erase an early 19-point lead as it came back to beat Texas, 78-68, on Friday afternoon at Orleans Arena.

    Michigan State basketball looked like UCLA did the night before. And much like it did against Kansas. Mistake-prone. Frustrated. Falling apart. It was something MSU’s veterans made sure didn’t last. After falling behind Texas by 19 points in the first half of Friday’s Las Vegas Invitational title game, the Spartans began to steady themselves. On offense and defense.

    When you think about the worst possible start to a game Michigan State could have had, the Spartans did even worse on Friday night. After smashing UCLA on Thursday, the Spartans got off to a sluggish start against the Texas Longhorns in the Las Vegas Invitational title game before racing back to win, 78-68.

    Joshua Langford scored 29 points, Cassius Winston had 20 points and 10 assists, and No. 11 Michigan State beat Texas 78-68 in the Las Vegas Invitational championship game on Friday. Langford was 5 of 6 from 3-point range. Winston, who was named the tournament MVP, also had five rebounds for the Spartans (5-1), who trailed 25-6 eight minutes into the game.

    The season isn’t yet a month old and No. 11 Michigan State has already won a championship. The 11th-ranked Spartans overcame a sluggish start to come back and take down Texas 78-68 Friday night to win the Las Vegas Invitational.     Michigan State had an offense tonight that fired on all cylinders and a defense that only allowed 26 points in the first half against UCLA. It seemed like everything fell in the first half, with the Spartans shooting 54.2% percent from behind the arc. Cassius Winston did a phenomenal job of facilitating with seven assists and adding 19 points as well. His 15 points in the first half set the tone for the Spartans to gain an early lead and never look back from there.

    Everybody goes to Las Vegas hoping to go on a hot streak. No. 11 Michigan State actually did it Thursday night against No. 17 UCLA. A tremendous start by the Spartans left UCLA in a haze, its collective body language reminiscent of someone who had just lost their last dollar on the strip. In their 87-67 victory, the Spartans rectified much of what went wrong in their last appearance on a stage that big, the season-opening loss to Kansas.

    Junior guard Cassius Winston (Detroit, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) scored 19 points to lead four players in double figures as No. 11 Michigan State opened up a 25-point halftime lead en route to an 87-67 win over UCLA on Thursday night in one of two semifinals of the Las Vegas Invitational at Orleans Arena.

    Tom Izzo spent the week worrying about UCLA’s size. The Bruins didn’t spend enough time worrying about Michigan State’s outside shooting. The 11th-ranked Spartans hit 10 first-half 3-pointers and built as much as a 29-point lead by halftime. They coasted to an 87-67 victory over No. 17 UCLA in the opening night of the Las Vegas Invitational at Orleans Arena on Thursday.

    As it hit 3-pointer after 3-pointer in the first half of its eventual 87-67 win over UCLA, Michigan State saw something familiar in its opponent. Michigan State players saw a UCLA team that seemed panicked at times, unsure of what to do in the face of adversity and how to fight back in a big game. The Spartans recognized those attributes because not long ago, they were going through those growing pains themselves as a young team playing in its first marquee games.

    In a four-minute burst, Michigan State basketball staggered UCLA. In the next nine minutes, the Spartans knocked out the Bruins. And then came halftime. No. 11 MSU looked and played like a veteran team – hitting 3-pointers, running the court, moving the ball, rebounding hard, playing defense and executing a game plan to perfection.

    Michigan State trounced on a wounded UCLA team early and didn’t let up as the Spartans out-toughed the Bruins to the tune of a 20-point victory in the opening round of the Las Vegas Invitational. The Spartans relied on a hot stroke from just about anyone who touched the ball early on and carried that over, with some defense, into the second half.

  • Size is top concern for Michigan State heading into UCLA matchup

    No. 10 Michigan State (3-1) will face No. 17 UCLA (4-0) on Thanksgiving (10 p.m. ET, FS1) in a semifinal matchup of the Las Vegas Invitational. Spartans’ biggest concern in that matchup is a disparity in size between the two teams’ frontcourt, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said on Monday after practice. “These teams we play now are huge,” Izzo said. “My biggest concern is size, a little bit of foul trouble and that hooking an all that stuff.”

  • No. 11 Michigan State Faces No. 17 UCLA in Las Vegas Invitational on Thursday

    Michigan State’s men’s basketball team arrived in Las Vegas on Tuesday evening and went through practice at the Orleans Arena the next day in preparation for a matchup with No. 17 UCLA in one of two semifinal games of the Las Vegas Invitational on Thursday, Nov. 22. Tipoff is slated for 10 p.m. ET.

  • Michigan State vs. UCLA tipoff: Prediction, preview

    The Bruins are unbeaten, but haven’t been tested yet, with three wins over low-major programs and one against a mid-major. UCLA, like Kansas, has size and depth with its size. That begins with a 7-footer in 7-1 five-star freshman Moses Brown, who’s averaging 17.3 points and 12 rebounds. Kris Wilkes, a 6-8 sophomore wing from Indianapolis, is probably UCLA’s best player.
