Five years ago, Tyler Hunt took a chance. After enrolling at Michigan State in 2017, he showed up for a tryout. The former do-it-all standout from Gobles High School did enough to impress the staff and made the team as a punter/kicker. Hunt is now back for a sixth and final year with the Spartans to close out a unique journey. He has progressed from walk-on to scholarship player, endured season-ending injuries, and made the rare switch from specialist to tight end.

If you would have told Tyler Hunt before the season that he was going to score Michigan State’s first rushing touchdown this season, he likely would have laughed in your face. Forget the fact he’s a walk-on former punter turned tight end, but he wasn’t buying the idea of a tight end getting the ball in the backfield.

When it rains, it pours. The list of Michigan State players who have been bitten the season-ending injury bug has grown by one on Friday as Tyler Hunt is being reported out for the remainder of the year. According to reports, he suffered a non-contact injury in practice (which is obviously never good) and will miss the rest of the season, making that two starting punters out for the year.
