The season is only two games old but Michigan State’s forward line of Patrick Khodorenko, Taro Hirose and Mitchell Lewandowski appears to be a unit that can lift Spartan fans out of their seats. They’re skilled, they’re smart, they have good chemistry and look like they’ve been playing together for years. Actually, in some ways they have.

Spartan hockey players spent the summer working out with NHL Teams
Over the summer, defenseman Zach Osburn, forward Taro Hirose and defenseman Mitch Eliot all participated in NHL development camps. As for sophomore forward Patrick Khodorenko, he represented Team U.S.A in the World Junior Summer Showcase. “It was fun,” Osburn said. “Going into it I was pretty nervous to be with all those really good players and skilled players. It almost was a little intimidating, but when I was there you kinda realize, you know what these guys are good, but I feel pretty good too.”

Spartans Share NHL Development Camp Experiences
A trio of current Spartans had the opportunity to intensify their summer training programs by taking part in NHL development camps in recent weeks. Sophomore defenseman Mitch Eliot attended the Detroit Red Wings’ camp, while classmate Taro Hirose went to the Toronto Maple Leafs’ camp. Junior defenseman Zach Osburn took part in the Nashville Predators’ camp.

Taro Hirose carving own role as part of power play unit
Although MSU’s penalty kill play is dispiriting, the Spartans have been improving on the power play, scoring a power-play goal in six of the Spartans’ last seven games. A major factor of the Spartans positive refinement on the power play lies upon freshman forward Taro Hirose.
