Michigan State Vice President and Director of Athletics Alan Haller and women’s basketball head coach Suzy Merchant have come to a mutual decision that Merchant will step down as the program’s head coach, effective immediately. Associate head coach Dean Lockwood will serve as interim head coach while a national coaching search is conducted.

Suzy Merchant will remain away from the team indefinitely following a medical incident and car accident late last month. Merchant released a statement Tuesday night, her first public comments since the Jan. 28 accident .”I’m currently focusing on my health and well-being and taking the necessary time to recover,” Merchant said in the statement, released through the basketball program’s Twitter account. “On behalf of my family and myself, we would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to all who have shown support and sent well wishes following my recent car accident and medical episode. The outpouring of love and support from the community has been truly heartwarming and has provided strength and comfort during this difficult time.”

Michigan State women’s basketball coach Suzy Merchant has been hospitalized after being in a one-car crash Saturday morning. According to a statement from Michigan State, Merchant “was involved in a minor one-car accident due to a medical incident on Saturday morning. She is currently at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing undergoing testing and is in stable condition.”

MSU women’s basketball Head Coach Suzy Merchant will not be able to coach for the Spartans in today’s game against Northwestern due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols, according to a statement made via social media from the team. There’s a problem, though: Amazingly, she is among the lowest-paid of the 14 Big Ten women’s basketball coaches, neck and neck with Illinois and Minnesota for dead last. Eleven Big Ten coaches make more than $600,000, eight make more than $700,000, seven top $800,000, and three are over $1 million. Michigan’s Kim Barnes Arico’s newest contract, signed in September, is worth about $300,000 a year more than Merchant’s.

The Spartan women’s basketball team improved to 4-0, while head coach Suzy Merchant reached another milestone, as MSU defeated Bryant, 100-60, Friday afternoon at the Breslin Center. In her 15th season, Merchant captured her 300th win at Michigan State, holding a 300-157 record at the helm of the Spartans. She had just reached her 500th career win against Valparaiso on Nov. 16.

Michigan State head coach Suzy Merchant led the United States women’s basketball team to a silver medal at the Pan American games in Lima, Peru on Saturday night. The U.S. was looking for its first Pan Am women’s basketball gold medal since 2007, the U.S. (4-1) came up short offensively, falling 79-73 to Brazil (5-0) in the gold medal game at Coliseo Eduardo Dibos in Lima.

Suzy Merchant will coach the United States in the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. The competition will take place July 31-Aug. 4. “First off I would say it’s extremely humbling,” Merchant said. “I don’t think there’s a prouder moment in your profession than to be able to represent your country and have the opportunity to win a gold medal. I feel very blessed and honored to have this opportunity.”
