Shakur Brown tied for first in nation with five interceptions
Five games into the season, Brown now has five interceptions. That puts him in a three-way tie for the most in the nation and his 1.0 interceptions per game are the most for anyone who has played more than one game. He is the first Spartan to record five interceptions in a season since safety David Dowell in 2017 and the last with more than five was cornerback Demetrice Martin with seven in 1994.

But among the rest of the cornerbacks on Michigan State’s roster, not a lot has changed in the weeks since then. “We were already competing, everybody was competing,” junior cornerback Josh Butler said. “You just have to step up to play well. Everybody in the room can play. You just have to go out there in practice and in camp.”

Shakur Brown, a true freshman cornerback and late addition to the 2017 recruiting class, was still finishing paperwork on Monday and missed the first practice but has been with the team since Tuesday. Michigan State DB signee Shakur Brown set to enroll
Most of Michigan State’s 2017 recruiting class arrived on campus July 5 and in the following days, but one player stayed home: Woodland (Stockbridge, Ga.) cornerback Shakur Brown. Brown was the Spartans’ latest commit, joining the class in June. After his addition became official, Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio explained that he was not at minicamp because he was completing classwork. That process dragged into July.

Brown, a three-star cornerback listed as an athlete on 247Sports, was originally committed to West Virginia, one of the first Power 5 schools who offered the Woodland (Stockbridge, Ga.) High ballhawk a scholarship. At some point in the process, Brown reconsidered and is a late addition to a Spartan recruiting class that also includes cornerbacks Tre Persons and Josiah Scott. Brown is rated the No. 74 athlete in the nation by 247Sports as well as the No. 117 prospect out of the state of Georgia.
