The Thursday announcement of Duke’s visit to Breslin Center next fall as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge added to what was already a difficult slate for the Spartans next year.

Several Football Game Times Announced
Michigan State will kick off the 2019 season on Friday, Aug. 30 vs. Tulsa at 7 p.m. in Spartan Stadium in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The game will be televised on FS1. This marks the eighth time in the last nine years that the Spartans will open on Friday night. The Spartans are 7-0 in their previous Friday night games under head coach Mark Dantonio, including a 6-0 mark in Spartan Stadium.

Michigan State football reportedly will host Akron in football, which would complete the Spartans’ 2022 schedule. According to documents obtained via the Freedom of Information Act by fbschedules.com, the Zips will receive $1.5 million to visit Spartan Stadium on Sept. 10, 2022. The two schools have not played since 1913 and 1914, both MSU wins (41-0, 75-6).

Schedule at end of season only gets worse
If it feels like Rutgers makes for an anti-climatic end to Michigan State’s football season, get used to it. It’s going to get worse before it gets better. On a weekend filled with compelling matchups and historical rivalries, the Spartans’ end-of-season schedule over the next five years is not compelling or historical or even remotely interesting. The Big Ten has a lot of priorities in filling out its slate this weekend. MSU isn’t among them.
