The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced on Tuesday that rookie linebacker Riley Bullough has been promoted from the team’s practice squad to its 53-man roster. The former Spartan was signed by Tampa Bay as an undrafted free agent in May and played in all four of the team’s preseason games. Prior to his promotion, Bullough had been on the Buccaneers’ practice squad since the beginning of the regular season.

Michigan State has a healthy 35 alumni in the NFL, per ESPN. At the moment, it feels like fewer. Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell continues to hold out in a contract dispute. First, Tampa Bay Buccaneers players and coaches learned that their new linebacker, Riley Bullough, is a pretty strong vocal leader on the field. Then, they learned that he can sing pretty well, too. Those were the takeaways from the season premiere of Hard Knocks on Tuesday night on HBO, during which the former Michigan State linebacker saw plenty of screen time, particularly for an undrafted rookie.

Michigan State had just two players picked in the 2017 NFL Draft: Defensive lineman Malik McDowell in the second round and safety Montae Nicholson in the fourth round. But several more former Spartans will find their way to training camps later this year, as undrafted free agents.

They ask insightful questions, silly questions, offensive questions, completely irrelevant questions. Sometimes just to gauge how a prospect reacts. The toughest question during the process for quarterback Tyler O’Connor has been about Michigan State. “Explain your 3-9 record,” he said Wednesday after the Spartans’ pro day.

Three Spartans were in attendance for the NFL’s yearly meat market, more commonly referred to as the NFL Scouting Combine, this past weekend. The combine is a huge chance for players to improve (or hurt) their draft stock all while running Jim Tomsula directed drills in their underwear. It has to be embarrassing but hey, when there are millions of dollars at the end of that tunnel you don’t ask questions. This year, it was Malik McDowell, Riley Bullough and Montae Nicholson running around in their skivvies for their chance at a pay day. Let’s see how they measured up.

The football bloodlines run strong in the Bullough family. The latest one headed to the NFL is Michigan State third-team All-Big Ten Conference linebacker Riley Bullough, the aggressive, relentless younger brother of Texans linebacker Max Bullough. Bullough was the fourth member of his family to play for the Spartans, including his uncle, Chuck, father Shane and his brother, Max. His grandfather, Hank, played offensive line for Michigan State and the Green Bay Packers.

When ESPN released its top 10 NFL draft prospects by position this week, there was one spot that came as no surprise.Malik McDowell was named the top defensive tackle prospect eligible for the 2017 draft, in a list compiled by Todd McShay. The former Michigan State star, who is forgoing his final year of eligibility to enter the draft, has long been projected as a first-round pick.
