  • Five former Spartans slated to play in all-star games on Saturday

    Defensive tackle Raequan Williams, safety David Dowell and offensive lineman Tyler Higby are all on the West team for the East-West Shrine Bowl. The game is at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., and kicks off at 3 p.m. on the NFL Network. On the other coast, quarterback Brian Lewerke and wide receiver Darrell Stewart Jr. are on the American team roster in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. The game is at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., and starts at 7 p.m. on the NFL Network.

    Raequan Williams understands how this sounds, given where he’s from and where he’s at now. And for a player who has made a career for himself working in the trenches, carving out an NFL future as a dominant defensive tackle at Michigan State, he realizes it probably sounds a bit counterintuitive. But it’s the truth, man. “I don’t really like crowds,” the Spartans’ fifth-year senior co-captain said, laughing. “I don’t like being around a lot of people. I guess I’m claustrophobic.”

  • Spartans name four captains for 2019 season

    Michigan State broke preseason camp Thursday, and before the Spartans headed for a couple of days off, they also named this season’s captains. Fifth-year senior quarterback Brian Lewerke and senior linebacker Joe Bachie were named Michigan State captains for the second straight season while fifth-year senior defensive tackle Raequan Williams and fifth-year senior defensive end Kenny Willekes were also named a captain. It’s the first time Michigan State has named four captains since 2009.

    Senior linebacker Joe Bachie checked in at No. 92, senior defensive tackle Raequan Williams is No. 74 and senior defensive end Kenny Willekes landed at No. 52. Bachie, Williams and Willekes all are heading into their third season as starters for the Spartans, who finished No. 1 nationally in rushing defense in 2018.
