Michigan State heads into spring practice with five scholarship quarterbacks on the roster in Russo, Thorne, Day, Kim and Fay. Russo and Thorne are the frontrunners to win the competition, which could stretch into the fall. Even if there is a clear leader coming out of the spring, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Tucker doesn’t make that publicly known.

Payton Thorne will be Michigan State’s starting quarterback for at least another week. Spartans coach Mel Tucker said on Tuesday the redshirt freshman will start in Saturday’s game at Maryland, the final game of the season for Michigan State.

As Thorne drove up to Michigan State last weekend, he was more than prepared to compete for the starting quarterback position in his upcoming redshirt freshman season.

The case for and against Payton Thorne as MSU’s starting quarterback
Thorne was the top-ranked quarterback in the state of Illinois for the 2019 class. As a senior at Naperville Central, Thorne completed about 65 percent of his passes for 3,113 yards and 40 touchdowns, while adding 451 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. In just two seasons with the Redhawks, Thorne holds the school record for most career completions (342), passing yards (5,367) and touchdowns (65).

The rapid process that led QB Payton Thorne to Michigan State
Before playing a single snap of high school football, Payton Thorne wrote down five colleges he wanted to play at. Michigan State was one of them and he now has a future with the Spartans. Thorne, a 2019 three-star quarterback from Naperville Central High School in Illinois, committed to Michigan State last week and will sign a national letter of intent on Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period.

Michigan State football flips 2019 QB Payton Thorne from Western Michigan
The glaring hole in the Michigan State football 2019 recruiting class was quarterback. It appears MSU coach Mark Dantonio has filled that need. On Dec. 4, MSU offered a scholarship to Naperville (Ill.) Central quarterback Payton Thorne, who had been committed to Western Michigan. Thorne posted on Twitter Friday his commitment to the Spartans.
