    A once deep Michigan State team has seen many of its tools taken out of its toolbox in the last few weeks, as key players have exited the lineup and defenses have slowed down others. Yet in a key midseason Big Ten road game, Michigan State was able to get the job done with Cassius Winston and a strong defensive effort.

    Winning on the road is tough in the Big Ten. It’s a proposition made much easier when Cassius Winston is your point guard. The junior was outstanding Thursday, scoring a career-high 29 points and handing out six assists to lead No. 6 Michigan State to a 70-64 victory over Nebraska at Pinnacle Bank Arena. It was the 19th straight Big Ten regular-season victory for the Spartans, establishing a program record. It also ended Nebraska’s 20-game home winning streak.

    Having better luck in a tight game than the football team did, Michigan State basketball went to Lincoln and escaped with a 70-64 victory against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. No one said it was pretty, because it sure wasn’t, but the Spartans were once again without Kyle Ahrens and Josh Langford meaning that other guys such as Gabe Brown and Aaron Henry would have to step up once again — and that they did.

    If Mike Garland had just answered the question, I really would have had a story. “How would you defend Cassius Winston?” I asked Michigan State’s long-time assistant coach Thursday night. “I’m not going to put it out there how I would defend my guy,” he said, laughing, while collecting his things in MSU’s locker room after a 70-64 win at Nebraska. “I have an idea.”

    Most nights, Cassius Winston plays basketball like a jazz artist in a hip-hop world. Then there are those rare moments when Michigan State’s point guard transcends the cadence of the game and bursts into his own genre. His avant-garde rhythms with the ball reach uncharted territory. He becomes a frenetic blend of John Coltrane’s staccato daggers with his shot, MC5’s feverish speed in pushing the pace in transition and Kendrick Lamar’s lyrical fury in attacking the basket off the bounce.

Rocky Lombardi took over Saturday, with Brian Lewerke resting his injured shoulder, and the Spartans continued to sputter along with the ball.

    Michigan State’s offense hasn’t had any rhythm much of the season, and on Saturday at Nebraska, it was again the main reason the Spartans walked away with a loss. Despite yet another solid defensive performance, Michigan State could not find the end zone as Nebraska kicked three fourth-quarter field goals to earn a 9-6 victory in front of 88,793 at Memorial Stadium.

    On a windy, frigid day, with flurries flying on the Great Plains, Michigan State once against asked its defense to win a game. Once again, it wasn’t enough. Nebraska (4-7, 3-5 Big Ten) rallied from a 6-0 deficit in the fourth quarter with a trio of field goals for a 9-6 win against Michigan State (6-5, 4-4) on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

    For the second week in a row, Michigan State’s six points weren’t enough. The Spartans were held to two field goals Saturday in Memorial Stadium, and Nebraska’s three allowed it to sneak by MSU 9-6. MSU’s offense, with redshirt freshman Rocky Lombardi playing the entire game at quarterback, wasn’t able to back up a defense that kept the Cornhuskers off the board until the fourth quarter. Nebraska went 4-for-14 on third down and netted 248 total yards against the Spartan defense, while their offense failed to reach the end zone.

    Facing snowy and windy weather that a swirling wind that at times hit 30 MPH, while playing without starting quarterback Brian Lewerke, the offense, led by Rocky Lombardi, failed to find any kind of consistency once again as the Spartans wasted another sterling defensive effort, falling to Nebraska in ugly fashion, 9-6.

    The Spartans (6-5, 4-4 Big Ten) got field goals of 34 and 26 yards from Matt Coghlin but was unable to sustain offense against a Nebraska defense that has struggled most of the season.

    It happened again. Michigan State just needed to score one touchdown to beat Nebraska on the road Saturday, but the Spartans just couldn’t get the job done. For the fifth time this season, the Spartans lost thanks to a lackluster offensive effort and for a second straight game, and third time this year, they failed to break double-digits in the scoring column. Michigan, Ohio State and now the Cornhuskers have held the Spartans to under 10 points which is shocking considering the amount of talent this team began the season with.

    Rocky Lombardi did a lot of things in Saturday’s loss to Nebraska — some of them well, some of them not. But he gets this honor for his quick instincts and fumble recovery midway through the second quarter that kept the ball in MSU’s hands at its own 33-yard line.

    One week after facing the Big Ten’s top team in total offense, Michigan State will line up against the No. 2 squad on the list. The Spartans (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten), who are coming off a 26-6 loss at home to Ohio State, play at Nebraska (3-7, 2-5) on Saturday (noon ET, FOX) in their final road game of the season.

    Matt Coghlin accounted for all of MSU’s points last week connecting on two of three field goal attempts. He was good on kicks of 44 and 38 yards and missed from 51 yards out. The miss was his first non-block miss of the year.

Coach Mark Dantonio called it an “outstanding environment, one of the great venues in college football.” Memorial Stadium’s capacity exceeds 85,000 and Nebraska has an NCAA-record streak of 368 consecutive sellouts dating back to 1962. “What I remember is it’s super loud,” Michigan State senior safety Khari Willis said. “Their fans bring it.”

Freshman forward Jaren Jackson Jr. finished with 15 points while going 8-for-8 from the stripe and grabbing 10 boards, and Miles Bridges and Cassius Winston both added 12 points for the Spartans, who moved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten with the win.
