Michigan State has been seen as a national title contender ever since Miles Bridges announced he was returning to school back in April. It now knows its road to that title. Michigan State will open the NCAA Tournament as a No. 3 seed against Bucknell in Detroit Friday. The winner of that game will play either TCU, Arizona State or Syracuse.

The last time the Spartans played, they had no idea which team awaited them in the NCAA Tournament. Or which region they’d be in. MSU (29-4 overall), however, is headed to the Big Dance for the 21st consecutive season, this time as a No. seed in the Midwest region.

The national championship has been the goal for Michigan State since before the season started, and on Sunday night the Spartans found out what the path looks like to achieve that goal. And after days of sweating what the NCAA Tournament selection committee might think of the Spartans’ overall resume, the Big Ten regular-season champions will get to stay close to home by beginning play at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

With the Big Ten Tournament pushed up to be hosted at Madison Square Garden, the Michigan State Basketball team had a week to sit back and speculate about who they play and where they play in the NCAA Tournament. After the dust had settled Sunday evening, the 3-seeded Spartans found out they would not have to do much traveling after being sentenced to play 14-seeded Bucknell out of the Patriot League at Little Caesers Arena in Detroit, MI.

On paper, Michigan State looked the part of a Final Four and national championship contender. On the court, it didn’t always play out that way. Michigan State extended its Big Ten record by earning a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the 21st consecutive season, receiving a No. 3 seed in the Midwest Region. The Big Ten Champion Spartans (29-4) will face No. 14 seed Bucknell (25-9) in the first round on Friday, March 16 in Detroit at Little Caesars Arena (time, TV announced later tonight).
