A new name has emerged in the potential search for a head coach on Monday as Adam Nelson of Daily Dirt reported that Maurice Joseph, a former Spartan player, actually turned down the head coaching position at Fairleigh Dickinson because he’s “involved” in the vacant assistant coaching position search at Michigan State.

A month before the 2016-17 college basketball season started, Maurice Joseph was thrown into a difficult spot. The 31-year-old Canadian-born assistant coach at George Washington was elevated to interim head coach after Mike Lonergan, whom he played for at Vermont and had worked under since 2011, was fired. Joseph had no head coaching experience and not much guidance other than a binder he had been keeping with philosophy ideas for whenever he did take the next step. Thankfully, he also had an old mentor he knew he could call in Tom Izzo.

The newly named interim coach for the George Washington men’s basketball had one free day on his schedule in September, before team practices officially began — and he knew he wanted to spend it with one of his mentors, Hall of Fame coach Tom Izzo.
