Michigan State record book: After two decades, the assists record changed hands
After three-and-a-half seasons as one of the best point guards in college basketball, Cassius Winston recorded his 817th career assist in a January home win over Wisconsin. In doing so, he passed Mateen Cleaves for the most assists not only in Michigan State history but also in Big Ten history – a moment that was celebrated in a postgame ceremony.

Cassius Winston enters Friday night’s game against Wisconsin needing four assists to pass Mateen Cleaves to become the program’s all-time assist leader. Cleaves currently holds the record at 816 and Winston sits with 813 assists.

Cassius Winston closing in on Mateen Cleaves’ assists record
Winston enters Michigan State’s Thursday game against Minnesota at 802 career assists. That places him just 14 shy of tying the school record of 816 assists, set by Mateen Cleaves in 2000. Cleaves’ record is also the Big Ten record. For a program that’s had no shortage of standout point guards, recording more assists than any other player to ever wear the green and white is a significant accomplishment.
