Michigan State baseball’s redshirt-junior pitcher Mason Erla was selected in the 17th round of the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday. Erla was selected in the 17th round (pick number 501) by the Los Angeles Angels.
Three Michigan State baseball players earned Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch honors, as the conference announced its preseason honors list and preseason poll ahead of Friday’s 2021 season openers around the league. The conference coaches voted on the top six teams and also selected three student-athletes from their own squads to a Preseason Honors list. Junior pitcher Mason Erla, senior outfielder Bryce Kelley and senior infielder Bailey Peterson earned the preseason recognition.

Erla is ranked No. 170 in this draft by Baseball America, which would normally be a great thing. Almost certainly, he would be taken in the first 10 rounds. But this year, the draft has been shrunk to just five rounds and only 160 players will be drafted when you count compensation picks. There were 40 rounds and 1,217 players drafted last year.
