There were some irritable Spartans hanging around the Duffy Daugherty building this week. Not surprisingly, most of those guys were members of Michigan State’s defense. That will happen when you’re coming off a 48-3 loss, one that was not only the worst in the Mark Dantonio era but also included Ohio State running the ball for 335 yards.

I don’t care much about Big Ten Championship scenarios or bowl projections at this current point in time. I just want to see Michigan State end the season on a strong note and finish with a record of 9-3, which would far surpass the expectations for most pundits.

No. 17 Michigan State hosts Maryland on Senior Day Saturday, Nov. 18 at 4 p.m. in Spartan Stadium. The Spartans (7-3, 5-2 Big Ten), tied for second in the Big Ten East Division standings, are looking to rebound from last week’s loss at Ohio State, while the Terrapins (4-6, 2-5) remain in the hunt for a second straight bowl bid despite falling to Michigan at home last week, 35-10.

All of the struggles the Spartans have shown in running the ball proved costly to the rest of the offense in last week’s 48-3 blowout at Ohio State, the fourth straight game MSU failed to gain 100 yards on the ground as a team. With minimal threat on the ground, QB Brian Lewerke could not effectively use the play-action fake to freeze the Buckeyes or the rollout to stretch the defense laterally while looking downfield.

With Michigan State losing to Ohio State 48-3 last Saturday, MSU is looking for a bounce-back game on both sides of the ball this week against Maryland. For the defense in particular, though, the Spartans were knocked down a few levels by giving up 335 yards rushing, the most allowed by any team in the Mark Dantonio era. And while Maryland isn’t Ohio State by any stretch of the imagination, the Terrapins do have a rushing attack that had its way with MSU a season ago and can make things interesting Saturday.
