Marcus Bingham Jr. is reportedly moving on from college basketball. According to Mike Lacett, a sports reporter for news station WZZM 13 in Bingham’s hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Bingham will prepare for the 2022 NBA Draft.

Tom Izzo, tag-teaming with longtime assistant coach Dwayne Stephens, “went a little old-school” on Marcus Bingham Jr. at halftime of Friday’s Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal against Wisconsin, for those wondering what spurred the senior center’s inspired second half. Izzo was describing the delivery of the message, but it also applies to the content.

Izzo obviously doesn’t want to give away the scouting report but Marcus Bingham Jr. will likely be a primary defender against Dickinson. And the 7-0 senior center is looking forward to the matchup. “I feel like as a big I’ve been slept on in this league a lot,” Bingham said. “I feel like I’ve grown a lot. I kind of take my matchups personally.”

If Bingham and the Spartans were to get nine games in the postseason and Bingham keeps his average blocks per game at 2.5, he would get have a total of 98 blocks this season. This would nearly make Bingham the second Spartan to eclipse 100 blocks in a season. He would still have some work to do though if he wants to break Jaren Jackson’s record.

The final moments Saturday between Michigan State and Northwestern capped off one of the toughest games of Marcus Bingham Jr.’s career. The senior center, who had returned to the court as the target for a last-gasp inbounds play after being benched for nearly all of the game’s final minutes, missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw with 0.7 seconds left to seal the Spartans’ 64-62 loss.

Bingham is essentially a new player this season. Through seven games, he’s averaging over 23 minutes per game which has translated to 10.9 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game. He’s on pace to become Michigan State’s all-time blocks leader as long as he stays healthy because he’s just 40 away from Tillman’s spot atop the list with 153. Currently, Bingham has 113.

Marcus Bingham Jr. grabbed an offensive rebound in the paint and kicked the ball back out front. A missed Michigan State basketball shot found its way back into his hands on a long rebound at the top of the key. No one around him on the perimeter, a clear 3-point attempt in sight. No one in front of him, either. Instead of shooting from long distance, Bingham dribbled into the lane and drew a foul. He tapped his head on the basket stanchion, then turned around with a smile to high-five to his teammates.

Marcus Bingham Jr. reached the magical 7-foot mark during the offseason, and no one could have been happier than the Michigan State basketball senior’s mother. “Because I keep growing,” he said with a chuckle. “I’m probably still growing.”

Marcus Bingham Jr. joined a pretty exclusive club earlier this year. When Michigan State took its official measurements for the 2021-22 season, Bingham topped the tape at an even 7-foot, an inch taller than last year. Joining the 7-foot club prompted a celebration – particularly from Bingham’s mom, he said. For a player who was a full foot shorter at the start of high school, 7-footer status was unexpected and exciting.

At first, it seemed like another year of unfulfilled potential for Marcus Bingham Jr., but then he really developed into an impact player down the stretch. The positives he provided far outweighed the obvious negatives he brings to the floor, and this offers a lot of hope for his upcoming senior year.

Nearly two-thirds of the way through the season, Michigan State may, at last, be moving closer to an answer to one of its biggest lineup questions. Marcus Bingham Jr. has started the Spartans’ last three games at center after taking over for Thomas Kithier. And while his numbers aren’t eye-popping, he’s providing a boost for Michigan State defensively while playing some of the most consistent and aggressive basketball of his career.

There was a moment on Saturday night when Aaron Henry stood near the scorer’s table, hands open, earnestly talking to his teammate, roommate, and fellow class member Marcus Bingham Jr. Bingham was about to check back into the game in the second half after getting pulled just 30 seconds after halftime when he took an ill-advised jumper from the corner early in the shot clock, and Henry was imploring Bingham to pick up the energy.
