Luke Campbell was active in 10 games this season and the Pinstripe Bowl but announced earlier today that he is now four days into recovery from ACL and Meniscus repair surgery. Campbell, who was one of the best offensive linemen on the team, must have been dealing with this injury for a few weeks, at the minimum.

It was an on-the-job learning curve for Luke Campbell and Cole Chewins last year. Center Brian Allen, a three-year starter with experience at all three interior positions, was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the fourth round of the NFL draft. The former three-star prospect from Lewis Center, Ohio, had been hoping for an offer from the Spartans, and he got one just a month before signing day, visiting East Lansing that week and committing shortly after.

If there is one position where being the “next big thing” takes on a literal meaning, it is on the offensive line. One of Mark Dantonio’s surprise announcements following the Michigan State spring game last month was that offensive lineman Luke Campbell had “solidified” himself at right tackle. Campbell redshirted in 2016, his first season on campus, but impressed coaches enough during the practices that season and the offseason to earn himself the starting job by the end of spring practice.

Michigan State had nine true freshmen see the field last year, a record during the Mark Dantonio era. With that, the Spartans have a number young players entering 2016 with some game experience. For others, they had to wait. The Spartans brought in 20 scholarship players in the 2016 class, meaning 11 of them didn’t play in a game last season. One of the biggest surprises is Luke Campbell, who appears to be leading for the starting right tackle job going into his redshirt freshman season. He started the Green and White game, which was won by the defense, 33-23, in a modified scoring system. “Luke Campbell has solidified himself at the right offensive tackle,” Dantonio said. “He’s gotten bigger, he’s over 300 pounds now. He’s a good athlete, he can run, he’s tough.”
