Laress Nelson was an afterthought in Michigan State’s 2017 recruiting class, but he came in and had his redshirt burned because of his versatility. Must Read: MSU Football: Game-by-game predictions for 2018 The speedy Fort Lauderdale, Fla., caught just three passes for 29 yards, but he was an experiment in the punt return game, flashing some of his elusiveness on seven returns for 34 yards with a long of 15 yards.

Inside the American Heritage School gymnasium in February, 14 Patriot football players sat center stage behind a long table draped in a black cloth, the school’s logo on the front. Local and national media stood in front of the stage, cameras clicking and video rolling. It was just another signing day in south Florida. Laress Nelson could only smile and clap as his teammates passed a microphone down the line, each stating the name of the college were they would continue their playing careers.

With one shimmy of his feet, Laress Nelson showed Michigan State fans what they’d been missing in their team’s punt return game. Nelson, a Spartans true freshman wide receiver, attempted his first career punt return in the third quarter on Saturday against Western Michigan.

When Laress Nelson signed his National Letter of Intent on Feb. 1, unlike most of his future teammates, he wasn’t just solidifying a previous decision. This was his verbal commitment, too.

Brandon Sowards is back as Michigan State’s punt returner. However, his experience alone may not be enough to keep the job. Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said during the first week of fall camp the team needs more production in punt return. There now appear to be three leaders for the position in Sowards and fellow wide receivers Darrell Stewart Jr. and Laress Nelson.

Cam Chambers waited and watched three of his classmates get their chance at wide receiver last season. First, Justin Layne moved to cornerback. Then Donnie Corley was dismissed from the program. Now, Chambers sees a chance to make his impact. “It was tough,” the redshirt freshman said today. “I wanted to help any time. I was eager to get out there. I was on-call and ready to go whenever I was called. ”He’s likely to hear his name very soon.

Laress Nelson spent the vast majority of the week leading up to National Signing Day unsure of where he would end up. For the previous eight months, the American Heritage (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) wide receiver had been stuck on seven offers: Bowling Green, Coastal Carolina, Fresno State, Miami (Ohio), Middle Tennessee, Northern Illinois and Southeast Missouri State. But without any Power Five schools in the mix, no one stuck out.

Michigan State just completed its 2017 recruiting class a week ago, but the Spartans are already off to a fast start in the 2018 class with three commitments. Those three commits — cornerback Xavier Henderson, tight end Trenton Gillison and wide receiver Joseph Scates — are all from Ohio and all four-star prospects. There are also a number of other targets the staff is working hard on.

Michigan State’s 2017 recruiting class wasn’t completed until head coach Mark Dantonio was nearing the end of his National Signing Day press conference. Emmanuel Flowers, a two-star defensive back from Chino (Cali.) Ruben S. Ayala, signed and sent in his National Letter of Intent minutes before Dantonio got to the portion of his presser where he planned on talking about the 6-foot-2, 175-pound prospect. That was fitting in a way, as Flowers was one of a few recruits the Spartans didn’t get in on until late in the process and managed to sign.

It appears we know Michigan State’s biggest position of priority as the Feb. 1 national signing day approaches: wide receiver. The Spartans have extended two new offers to class of 2017 wide receivers in the last two days, as it puts the finishing touches on its soon-to-be-signed recruiting class.
