In the wake of junior offensive guard David Beedle’s absence, freshman Kevin Jarvis surpassed the expectations of his Michigan State teammates. Beedle has been out for MSU with an undisclosed injury since the team’s 38-18 loss to Notre Dame in week 3. Jarvis, a 6-foot-4, 312-pound from Chicago, has started every game since then.

Michigan State offensive line boosted by pressure from true freshmen
After practice during preseason camp, the Michigan State players ate lunch, then took a break. The offensive line would head to its meeting room to watch film or just hang out. Turns out they weren’t alone. The rest of the Spartans offense joined the linemen, creating a bond on that side of the ball. And this season, coaches will be looking for that offensive line to stick as the glue that holds together an offense that assistant coach Mark Staten said “has a chance to be pretty special.”

Daily Debate: Which true freshman will make the biggest impact?
There was a time not long ago that maybe a handful of true freshmen would come in and play right away at Michigan State. In 2007, head coach Mark Dantonio’s first season, the Spartans played six true freshmen. That was the most MSU would play until 2015, when it was again six freshmen who saw the field. The 2016 season was an entirely different story, with Michigan State playing nine true freshmen because of a combination of performance and injuries. Under normal circumstances, that could be considered an aberration and MSU could go back to redshirting the vast majority of its 2017 class.
