One current Michigan State student-athlete and two former All-Americans have qualified for the 2019 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships that will be held July 25-28 in Des Moines, Iowa. Former Michigan State All-American Justine Kiprotich will run in the first round of the 1,500m on Friday, July 26 at 5:30 p.m. ET. Jerimiah Evans who will be a junior next season will compete in the discus, while former All-American and Big Ten Champion Tori Franklin will compete in the triple jump.

In one of the closes races in event history, senior Justine Kiprotich finished second in the men’s 1,500m at the NCAA Track & Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas on Friday. This is his second runner-up performance after finishing second in 2017 and seventh in 2018.

Agodu and Kiprotich Top Podium on Final Day of Big Ten Outdoor Championships
Michigan State placed 13 more Spartans on the podium on Sunday, May 12, en route to a seventh place (53 points) finish for the men and an eighth place (49 points) finish for the women. Seniors Will Agodu and Justine Kiprotich each stood atop the podium on Sunday as MSU’s two first-place finishers of the day, joining juniors Nick Guerrant and Asya Reynolds as 2019 Big Ten Track & Field Outdoor champions.

From Kenya to Michigan State, Justine Kiprotich finds success
Before Justine and Faith Kiprotich ever set foot on Michigan State’s campus, before they racked up thousands of miles as distance runners, they had to get to the United States. The siblings, born in Kenya, lived there for roughly the first decade of their lives. They immigrated to the U.S. as preteens, alongside their mother, Grace Cherono. They were able to make the move after repeated attempts at applying for a green card.

Benoit and Kiprotich Reach Finals at NCAA Championships
In the first day of action at the NCAA Championships, the Michigan State track & field team had two athletes reach finals at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Senior Max Benoit advanced to the finals in the 3,000m steeplechase, while junior Justine Kiprotich will compete in his second-straight final in the 1,500m.

Kiprotich and Daniels Earn All-Big Ten Honors
Sophomore Justine Kiprotich and junior Katelyn Daniels both earned All-Big Ten Track & Field honors on Tuesday. Kiprotich, a native of Kentwood, Michigan, was named to the men’s track & field first team. This is his second All-Big Ten honor after being named to the second-team last season. Daniels, a native of Lewis Center, Ohio, earned her third outdoor women’s All-Big Ten honor, capturing second-team honors this year. The junior earned second-team honors in 2016 and first-team in 2015. She also garnered Freshman of the Year honors in 2015.
