Julian Barnett was offered by Ohio State on Thursday, but on Friday, the Belleville (Mich.) star committed to Michigan State. “It’s been coming for a while,” he said of the timing. Tigers head coach Jermain Crowell describes Barnett as “explosive, aggressive, physical, and a playmaker.”

Barnett long had been seen as a wide receiver, but then his coach, Jermain Crowell, began grooming him as a cornerback. Now many schools want him on defense. So far in 2017, he said he has played both positions equally. For what it’s worth, Barnett said he speaks regularly with Michigan State wide receivers coach Terrence Samuel but very seldom with secondary coach Harlon Barnett. Michigan State will not play a game on the road until Oct. 7, when the Spartans head to Ann Arbor. The Spartans have four home games and a bye in the month of September, providing ample opportunity to get recruits on campus. That process began last week when the Spartans had a good group up for their victory over Bowling Green.

Michigan State finds itself in good position with four commits to its 2018 class, ranking the Spartans 23rd nationally (and sixth in the Big Ten) per the 247Sports Composite. Though it’s been a quiet last few weeks on the trail, coach Mark Dantonio and his staff are nonetheless off to an impressive start. At this point in the last cycle, MSU only had one verbal commitment.

Michigan State hosted a junior day on Sunday which had many talented prospects at it. The event produced a commitment from Dearborn Divine Child quarterback Theo Day. New offers were also extended to several attendees: Xenia (Ohio) wide receiver Meechi Harris, Gibraltar Carlson athlete Jaylan Franklin and Milan offensive tackle Michael Furtney in the junior class, and Detroit Cass Tech running back Jaren Mangham in the sophomore class.
