Two of Michigan State football’s most experienced players are not returning in 2021. Tight end Matt Dotson and right tackle Jordan Reid are not listed on the roster, which came out Tuesday morning as the Spartans opened their first spring practices under second-year coach Mel Tucker.

A pair of Michigan State offensive tackles are following through with their original plans to sit out the 2020 football season. MSU head coach Mel Tucker on Wednesday confirmed senior Jordan Reid and true freshman Justin Stevens are both opting out.

Jordan Reid announced on Twitter that he will be opting out of the 2020 season and appears that he is looking to return next season. Although Coach Mel Tucker stated that no roster spots were set, Reid is the most experienced Offensive Lineman for the Spartans since he was able to resist injuries over the last two years.

We’ve already seen the Big Ten Conference eliminate nonconference games from the 2020 schedule due to COVID-19. It’s certainly possibly — likely, even — that more changes are coming. But one Michigan State football player went on social media Friday to ask why the NCAA and the Big Ten are dragging out decisions regarding the upcoming season.

Five games, five different starting combinations for Michigan State’s offensive line. The only constant for the embattled front five has been right tackle Jordan Reid. Center Brian Allen, a three-year starter with experience at all three interior positions, was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the fourth round of the NFL draft. He was a team captain, the anchor of the offensive line and his spot is the most difficult for the Spartans to replace heading into this season.

Though they haven’t started a game yet, Michigan State’s newest offensive linemen are beginning to find their stride. MSU true freshmen Jordan Reid and Kevin Jarvis have both found time on the field this season. Jarvis, a 6-foot-4, 312-pound product of Park Ridge, Ill., primarily backs up David Beedle at right guard, while the 6-4, 271-pound Reid (Detroit Cass Tech) backs up fellow freshman Luke Campbell at right tackle.

After practice during preseason camp, the Michigan State players ate lunch, then took a break. The offensive line would head to its meeting room to watch film or just hang out. Turns out they weren’t alone. The rest of the Spartans offense joined the linemen, creating a bond on that side of the ball. And this season, coaches will be looking for that offensive line to stick as the glue that holds together an offense that assistant coach Mark Staten said “has a chance to be pretty special.”
