Malik Hall and Joey Hauser didn’t spend too much time on the court together last year. For the most part, they shared the power forward position, with both offering something different on both ends of the court. But this season, don’t expect that to be the case.

Hauser was the starter at the power forward position for most of the year, and he certainly had his moments over the course of the season. None of those moments were brighter than his scoring explosion against Davidson in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Hauser finished the game with 27 points, 10 points above his previous season high, and converted nine of his 12 shots in a narrow one-point win for the Spartans. That game in itself was of tremendous value to MSU’s season, and easily the highlight of Hauser’s Spartan career so far.

This season, Joey Hauser will do what few players in Michigan State history have done: Play in a game at the Breslin Center after kissing the floor. In March, Hauser took part in Michigan State’s senior ceremonies at the Spartans’ home finale. He said at the time that he was undecided as to his future plans, but the fact that he was participating in senior day activities after using just three seasons of eligibility seemed to telegraph his plans. A month later, though, he had decided that those plans now included returning to play at Michigan State again in 2022-23.

Michigan State might be losing one big man from its roster, but on Wednesday the Spartans found out they’ll also be getting one back. Joey Hauser, the 6-foot-9 forward who went through senior day festivities to close this season with the intention of not returning, announced on Wednesday that he’ll be back.

Hauser was asked if he has consulted with his brother, Sam Hauser of the Boston Celtics, about his decision regarding returning to college or pursuing a professional career. “I talked to him a little bit, just to get his opinion on it because it matters a lot to me,” Joey said. “He’s been in kind of similar situations, and he said that he thinks the best option for me would be to just play college basketball for another year.”

Stephanie Hauser stood in one of the front rows of Bon Secours Wellness Arena late Friday, clapping, cheering, and yelling as loud as she could. For years, she and her husband, Dave, have been through this. It’s a journey the Hausers couldn’t have expected when their son, Sam, committed to Marquette in 2015 and Joey followed him there two years later. No family does when their kids commit to a college. They figure they will stay there and finish. Have success. Maybe, if you’re lucky, leave early for the NBA.

Hoggard and laid the ball in to break a tie just before the clock expired. Michigan State’s men’s basketball team rising redshirt senior Joey Hauser was selected to the 2020-21 Academic All-District® Men’s Basketball Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday afternoon.
Hauser has to take a long look in the mirror and figure out how he wants to be remembered at Michigan State. If he doesn’t adjust he will be known as a talented offensive player who wasn’t able to make the most out of his opportunities because his defensive shortcomings kept him out for long stretches. If he toughens up, works on his defense, and sees it as a priority to play on the block, then he should find plenty of playing time.

Never mind that Joey Hauser had 25 points and 25 rebounds in his first two games in a Michigan State uniform. The junior transfer from Marquette was frustrated he missed all six of his 3-point attempts in wins over Eastern Michigan and Notre Dame. A sense of relief came when he hit two in a win Wednesday at Duke.
