Jay Johnson considers himself “a Big Ten person at heart.” He also understands the task at hand: Fix the offensive issues that have plagued Michigan State football the past two seasons. It starts up front for the Spartans’ new offensive coordinator. He believes his offensive linemen should be strong yet athletic. He calls tight ends “the MVP of what we do offensively.” He wants to be able to throw the ball and run it whenever MSU needs either.

MSU coordinators: Working from home going better than expected
Mel Tucker recently made a point that stuck with Scottie Hazelton. With the Michigan State football staff quarantined in their homes, the Spartans’ new head coach reminded his defensive coordinator of the spring of 2011, when Tucker was working as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ defensive coordinator. Starting in mid-March that year, the NFL entered a lockout that would last until late July.

Tucker Names Jay Johnson Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach
Michigan State head football coach Mel Tucker has announced that Jay Johnson will join the Spartan offensive staff as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Johnson, 50, is a veteran coach and administrator of 25 seasons, including 10 as an offensive coordinator at four FBS schools (Colorado, Minnesota, Louisiana, Southern Mississippi) in addition to coaching quarterbacks, running backs and tight ends as a position coach. Johnson comes to East Lansing after serving as the offensive coordinator at Colorado for one season under Tucker.

What to expect from Michigan State’s new play-caller Jay Johnson
Colorado’s offense wasn’t exactly dynamic last season and Johnson isn’t a household name or a young up-and-comer; the next big thing. I’d argue most of those thoughts stem from who Jay Johnson is not, rather than who he is or what he has done.
