Fifth-year senior Jack Camper is the latest Michigan State player to enter the transfer portal. The defensive end made the announcement Sunday on Twitter after missing the entire 2021 season because of injury. In the previous four seasons, Camper had 29 tackles with 4.5 tackles for loss, a sack and one fumble recovery in 27 career games, making two starts — one in 2018 and one in 2020.

Kenny Willekes returns for his junior season, coming off a very strong sophomore season that saw him go from unknown former walk-on, to one of the best defensive ends in the Big Ten. He was selected third-team All-Big Ten last year, after leading the team in sacks with seven, and tackles for loss with 14.5. He had 73 tackles, which ranked second in the Big Ten amongst defensive linemen and he played in all 13 games, including 12 starts.

Michigan State is beginning just its second week of fall camp but coach Mark Dantonio has already had time to evaluate his new roster. What stands out so far? Talent, Dantonio said. “I think I’m most pleasantly surprised with how many good players we have, quite honestly,” Dantonio said on Monday during Michigan State’s media day. “We lost some players, we lost some good players, we lost some other players who weren’t going to play for us.”

He played tight end for IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., a highly-regarded school for producing elite college prospects. He played both ways for the school and even excelled on the defensive side of the ball.

Matt Sokol will be adjusting to a new role this season as the most experienced player in Michigan State’s tight end room. Entering his junior year with two catches in 26 games played, Sokol will be the leader of a group featuring a redshirt freshman, two true freshman and a transfer from Buffalo competing to fill the shoes of Josiah Price and Jamal Lyles.

The word that seemed to echo throughout Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio’s National Signing Day news conference was “early.” He said it 12 times, sometimes in reference to how early his players committed during the 2017 cycle, but usually referring to his hopes for when incoming freshmen will begin to contribute. “Look for him to play early in his career here,” he said of wide receiver C.J. Hayes.

Originally from Virginia Beach, Virginia, Camper elected to spend his final two seasons of high school at IMG Academy — one of the best prep football programs in the nation — in Bradenton, Florida. Now, he’s settling into East Lansing at midyear, prepping for spring practice while undergoing grueling winter workouts, all while balancing college classes. And it’s exactly what the 6-5, 240-pound tight end wants.
Josiah Price, who finished his career in the fall with the most touchdowns by a Spartan at that position (21), headed down to IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) in January. He plans to train at the prestigious athletic institution well into March in the lead-up to the NFL Draft in April. While he does that, 3-star recruit Jack Camper has departed IMG, where he played his junior and senior seasons, to enroll early at Michigan State. Most would probably prefer to be in Florida, but since it means playing Big Ten football, Camper has embraced frigid life.

Ann Arbor (Mich.) Skyline receiver Hunter Rison, Fairfield (Ohi) corner Josiah Scott and Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy tight end Jack Camper all arrived in East Lansing last week and are now officially Spartans. They’re Michigan State’s only early enrollees this cycle and will get a head start by jumping into MSU’s weightlifting program and participating in spring practice.

Jack Camper headed from Virginia Beach to East Lansing on Wednesday. It’s not the first time he left home to pursue his passion and football future. Camper followed his brother, Blake, to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where he played his final two seasons of high school football before graduating in December.
