Xavier Henderson was only a month into practice. That’s all it took for the Michigan State true freshman safety to impress coaches and teammates while adjusting to the college level. “I come up here and I can run with some of the guys,” Henderson said last March, “but just kind of knowing what I’m doing and trying to play with knowledge so I can play faster is probably the biggest part.”

A web of connections led Michigan State halfway across the world to its next punter. Australia’s Jack Bouwmeester crossed the Pacific Ocean with his parents and came to East Lansing for their official visit at Michigan State two weekends ago. By the end of that weekend, this Australian Rules football player and cricket maven had committed to a full scholarship to play American football for the Spartans.

The latest addition to Michigan State’s 2019 recruiting class will be playing a long way from home. Australian punter Jack Bouwmeester announced his commitment to the Spartans late Sunday night via Twitter and told MLive he will join the program as a scholarship player after signing in December. He trains with Prokick Australia, which helps Australians earn opportunities playing football in the United States.
