New Indiana coach Tom Allen arrived as defensive coordinator before the 2016 season and took over in December when offensive guru Kevin Wilson was fired as head coach. Allen’s defense, which helped stymie the Spartans last year, is allowing 25.8 points and 353 yards per game this season. However, that includes 40.3 points per game in Big Ten play to rank 13th out of 14 teams and 431.7 yards in the Hoosiers’ three Big Ten losses, 11th-most in league games.

With Indiana on deck for Michigan State, defensive tackles coach Ron Burton is looking to eliminate the Hoosiers’ run game. The Spartans limited Minnesota to just 74 rushing yards in last Saturday’s 30-27 win on the road, Burton said stopping the opponent’s running game is always the primary goal of the defense.

Indiana has long been known as a team with a usually explosive, fast-tempo offense with a defense opposing teams loved to face. That is no longer the case in Bloomington, where first-year head coach Tom Allen has greatly improved the IU defense since originally coming in as a defensive coordinator before the 2016 season. The No. 18/19 Spartans (5-1 overall, 3-0 Big Ten) have traditionally had little trouble with the Hoosiers (3-3, 0-3) under current head coach Mark Dantonio. Michigan State’s Homecoming game vs. Indiana on Saturday, Oct. 21 in Spartan Stadium will start at 3:30 p.m., the conference office announced today. The game will be broadcast either on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2; the TV network will be announced following the games on Oct. 14.
Michigan State returns to the friendly confines of the Breslin Center after two games on the road with a nationally televised matchup against Indiana on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. (ET) on the Big Ten Network with Lisa Byington and Christy Winters Scott on the call. The Spartans will celebrate their annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day, honoring female athletes. Michigan State will honor its women sports throughout the game.
