Running backs built like Joiner are rare. Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, though, he did have a couple of nearby examples who showed him what was possible in former Crimson Tide runners Derrick Henry (6-3, 247) and Bo Scarborough (6-1, 235).There are pros and cons to playing the position at Joiner’s size, he said, which might explain why it’s a fairly uncommon sight.

Harold Joiner, running back from Auburn, will transfer to Michigan State
Michigan State coach Mel Tucker said his team was going to be active in the transfer portal, and for the second straight day, the Spartans secured a commitment from a high-level prospect. Running back Harold Joiner III, a redshirt sophomore at Auburn who entered the transfer portal in October, announced Thursday on Twitter he had committed to Michigan State.

Harold Joiner is a bit of a football unicorn. He stands 6-foot-3, weighs 221 pounds, runs about a 4.3-second 40-yard dash … and plays running back. Michigan State has sought out big running backs under coach Mark Dantonio. Its trio of Gerald Holmes, Madre London and LJ Scott all stand 6-1. Holmes and Scott both weigh around 230 pounds. But few players have the ability to be as imposing at the position as Joiner, the No. 5 running back in the 2018 class per the 247Sports composite.

In several respects, recruiting has been a waiting game for Michigan State the last few weeks. With the high school season and the academic year both getting started, many prospects can’t commit to visits to Michigan State, especially if they must travel long distances. But for the Spartans to land their first running back in the 2018 class, they must get players on campus.

Earlier in the summer, Birmingham (Ala.) Mountain Brook rising senior running back Harold Joiner named Michigan State his leader. Since then, a visit to LSU has made the Tigers the favorite in the minds of many recruiting analysts. The Spartans will have an opportunity to impress Joiner, an unusually sized 6-foot-3, 225-pound running back, as he is expected to take an official visit to East Lansing on Sept. 23 when MSU plays host to Notre Dame.
