Long lines of families run through the Spartan football program and the Miller family is no exception. For senior linebacker, Grayson Miller, playing at his family’s alma mater couldn’t mean more. Miller grew up in Georgetown, Kentucky, a town whose population doesn’t compete with the Michigan State student body, yet the MSU campus was not foreign to him. Both of Miller’s parents, John and Julie Miller, attended Michigan State and his father was a member of the football team from 1985-88.

Previewing the linebackers for 2018
Junior middle linebacker Joe Bachie is the leader of the group. He is coming off a junior season where he tallied 100 tackles, including 8.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, three interceptions and 3.5 sacks. Moreover, he was voted team MVP, the first sophomore since Drew Stanton in 2004 to win the award.

In front of more than 111,000 fans at the Big House in Ann Arbor. On the final snap of the game, he hit punter Blake O’Neill, helping force a fumble that Jalen Watts-Jackson returned 38 yards for a touchdown as time expired to give the Spartans an improbable 27-23 win against the Wolverines.

Safeties add experience to Michigan State’s secondary
With so much focus on Michigan State’s lack of a pass rush last season, the secondary almost has gotten a free pass. For a unit that has become accustomed to sending players to the NFL, the Spartans struggled in 2016 with just eight interceptions while ranking 12th in the Big Ten in pass efficiency defense. Yes, some of that was because Michigan State failed to put pressure on the quarterback, but subpar play in the back end didn’t help.

Assessing the Spartans’ secondary
Coming off a 3-9 season, Michigan State football is hoping to rebound in 2017. This season, though, one of the biggest weaknesses is their secondary. They have budding defensive backs in Justin Layne and true freshman Josiah Scott, but behind them, there’s not much. There is Tyson Smith, a player who was at one point highly-touted, but he is in the process of recovering from a stroke. While he seems to be healthy enough to play, no one will be able to tell how prepared he is to get back on the gridiron until the season starts.
