    The Michigan State football program hosted its annual Pro Day at the Duffy Daugherty Building on Monday. Eight players from the 2018 team – offensive guard David Beedle, linebacker Andrew Dowell, cornerback Justin Layne, defensive tackle Gerald Owens, linebacker Jon Reschke, running back LJ Scott, tight end Matt Sokol and safety Khari Willis – auditioned in front of National Football League scouts and personnel in preparation for the upcoming NFL Draft.

  • Gerald Owens to play last game against home state

    James and Frances Owens still remember the shock. The two made the 10-hour trip from southern New Jersey to watch their son, Gerald Owens, play in the annual spring scrimmage his redshirt freshman season. It was a chance to see him as a running back again, just like when he was in high school.

  • Michigan State seniors have ‘experienced everything’ heading into final home game

    Gerald Owens arrived at Michigan State as a running back and will depart as a defensive tackle. In the five seasons in between, he packed on about 60 pounds, moved from the offensive backfield to the front line of the defense and has appeared in 29 games. Owens is now preparing for his last appearance at Spartan Stadium when Michigan State hosts Rutgers on Saturday.

    Being a Spartan has not been the easiest journey for senior defensive tackle Gerald Owens, but it’s the battle that has made his journey so memorable and rewarding. The Thorofare, New Jersey, native chose to continue his football career at Michigan State after a successful high school career at West Deptford High School, in which he set the all-time record with 69 total touchdowns.

  • Michigan State’s New Jersey natives eager to perform in front of family, friends at Rutgers

    Gerald Owens was unsure of the final tally and still waiting to hear back from his dad. Cam Chambers, meanwhile, estimated the total will be between 25 and 30. Owens, a redshirt junior defensive tackle, and Chambers, a redshirt freshman wide receiver, will return to their home state of New Jersey on Saturday to play for No. 21 Michigan State (8-3, 6-2 Big Ten) in its regular-season finale at Rutgers (4-7, 3-5).

    Michigan State signed a pair of running backs to its 2014 class. One was Madre London, who has made six starts in 21 career games. The other was Gerald Owens, who has yet to touch the ball for the Spartans. Now standing 6-foot-2 and 312 pounds, the redshirt junior is tasked with plugging holes, not running through them.

  • Generating better pass rush a priority for Spartans’ defensive linemen

    One of Michigan State’s biggest issues during its problem-filled 2016 was generating a pass rush.The numbers don’t lie. The Spartans managed to get just 11 sacks during their 3-9 season. Only two teams finished with fewer sacks than MSU, which was tied for 124th out of 128 Football Bowl Subdivision teams.
