    Many Spartans represent Michigan State University in the NBA and they do it very well. Yet many others have to decide for lower levels of competition. What might come as an early disappointment for quite a few of them can become one incredible ride down the road. The opportunity to travel different countries, experience foreign cultures, meet countless interesting people all while playing the game they loved since being little kids is something many in the Spartan family have come to like and cherish with time.

  • Catching up with Gavin Schilling

    Schilling, who was actually born in Germany, has started his professional career in Europe and is in the middle of his third season in the BBL, Germany’s premier basketball league. After spending two years playing for Ratiopharm Ulm, he is now playing for the Löwen Braunschweig, and with averages of 11.8 points (on 54.4 percent shooting) and 7.7 rebounds, Schilling has truly taken the next step in his development as a player.

    Just days after the official start of college basketball practice last year, Michigan State forward Ben Carter went up to contest a shot in a practice session and landed awkwardly, injuring his knee. Less than two weeks later, forward Gavin Schilling also suffered a knee injury during practice in a non-contact situation.

  • How Did Michigan State Basketball’s 2013 Recruiting Class Pan Out?

    Michigan State entered the 2013-14 season with extremely high expectations as one of the picks to win it all. With that being said, the incoming recruiting class was not expected to make a big splash right away. However, as the years went one each player made some form of impact and while it wasn’t a dominant class it had it’s bright spots. And there’s still time for it to improve its stock with one player from the class still on the roster.

  • Way-too-early frontcourt preview for 2017-18

    The 2017-18 Michigan State basketball team will look a lot different than the one that took the court in last year’s NCAA Tournament. While the Spartans only lost one player that played significant minutes in a tournament game (Alvin Ellis III), they’ll go from one of the shortest teams in the country (ranked 289th in average height according to KenPom) to likely somewhere in the top 100.

    Last year Michigan State was dominated on the boards often. Teams like Purdue simply had too much size for the Spartans to keep up. That’s why Michigan State lived and died with the three ball. That won’t be the case next year in East Lansing.

    Eighty minutes per game to be had. Six big men to split those minutes. Imagine if Michigan State had also landed 6-foot-11 recruit Brandon McCoy. Nick Ward might have wound up at shooting guard next season.

  • Gavin Schilling says he will ‘100 percent’ be back for a fifth year at Michigan State

    First of all, he says he will “100 percent” be back for a fifth year at Michigan State. A few things had to happen for that. One, MSU coach Tom Izzo had to offer Schilling a roster spot. Two, Schilling had to want to stay, opting not to depart Michigan State as a graduate transfer and play immediately elsewhere. On Thursday, Schilling said: “I’ll be back and I can’t wait to get back out there.” As for his surgically repaired knee, Schilling said he’s at “85 percent.” He spent the entire 2017-18 season rehabbing and is just now back to lifting weights.

    The mere presence of Gavin Schilling and Ben Carter is almost cruel to Michigan State’s basketball team. Especially these days, when the Spartans’ two injured big men appear to be fairly able-bodied. They aren’t yet. Even if they can walk and dunk and shoot.
