A few weeks ago, as Michigan State was just really getting into the swing of preseason practice, Tom Izzo was asked about his starting lineup. The Hall of Fame coach was going over all of the possible combinations, contemplating what sort of rotation the Spartans might have this season when he got to Gabe Brown, the junior wing with limitless athleticism and potential. “We could do a lot of different things with Gabe,” Izzo said. “Gabe could start, he could be the sixth man, maybe the best we’ve had since Morris. So, we have some options.”

Player Profile – Gabe Brown
As a freshman, Brown averaged eight minutes a game, with a limited role as a spot-up shooter behind Matt McQuaid, Aaron Henry, and Joshua Langford. Brown came to be known as a player with confidence, energy, and passion, but with rebounding inconsistencies and spurts of sub-par defense he received more attention from his bench antics than he did from his play on the court. In his meager window of playing time, Brown attempted 43 shots (72.9% of his total shots on the season) from behind the arc making 16 (37.2%).

Waiting on the wings
The wing position in East Lansing hasn‘t garnered as much attention (even with highlight names like Miles Bridges throughout the years), especially not consistently. For the upcoming season at least that needs to change since the Spartans‘ biggest strength seems to lie at the small forward position. Aaron Henry, Gabe Brown, and Malik Hall figure to get most of the minutes at the three, and considering how far they‘ve come in their careers already it gives more than just a little bit of reason for optimism.

Gabe Brown is key piece to 2020-21 title puzzle
The 2019-20 season was supposed to be Gabe Brown’s time to shine. He was coming off a Final Four run as a freshman and included in that trip to the national semifinal was a breakout game against LSU in the Sweet 16. He just scratched the surface in his first season. It’s been well-documented that Brown is a hard worker and videos of him in the gym getting shots up for hours have been posted all over social media.

2019-20 Michigan State Basketball Season in Review: Gabe Brown
Gabe Brown’s sophomore season saw improvements in nearly every statistical category, but, does not feel like a big step forward. The 6’7″ Forward showed off his ridiculous athleticism all throughout the year with jaw-dropping dunks and blocks, playing 21.9 minutes per game. Unfortunately, you can argue this season was an overall disappointment for Gabe.

Big Four? Gabe Brown starting to work way into MSU’s core group
Before Michigan State’s season began, coach Tom Izzo talked a lot about the Spartans’ success hinging on the “big three.” That trio was guards Cassius Winston and Aaron Henry along with big man Xavier Tillman. It seemed like a given that Winston would fulfill that expectation while Tillman seemed like a solid bet, too. Henry was the wild card and he’s had his share of struggles this season.

Gabe Brown was sitting in his room and he was doing what many 14 year old kids like to do with a free summer evening. He was just hanging out, watching cartoons and thinking about boyhood stuff. All of a sudden there was a knock on the door and his father Charles entered. He tapped his son on the shoulder and told him that he had just finished watching some college basketball. His favorite team, the Michigan State Spartans, had played against the Michigan Wolverines, their most bitter rivals.

Gabe Brown hopes late nights in gym working on shot pay off
After a long day working out, going through practice, classes and studying, Gabe Brown leaves his apartment at about 11 p.m. The Michigan State sophomore forward makes the short walk across Harrison Road to the team’s practice facility at the Breslin Center. Sometimes he goes with teammates, often he’s alone. It’s part of Brown’s routine and he said he’s there usually six nights a week until about 1:30 a.m.

The last time most Michigan State fans saw Gabe Brown he was busy scoring a career-high 15 points in a Sweet 16 victory over LSU last March in the NCAA Tournament. On Tuesday night at the Moneyball Pro-am in Dimondale, Brown was busy wowing the crowd, hitting deep shots and hammering home electrifying dunks. He scored 59 points in his team’s win, an impressive showing even in the league that hardly puts and emphasis on defense.
